Cusher is a family business. The engineering record behind it spans twenty-five years at Microsoft and GitHub — from the Windows kernel to the cloud development environments used by millions of engineers.
The Record
Twenty-five years, shipped at scale
Ian Toal spent seventeen years on the Windows engineering team — kernel-level security and performance work, globalisation across Windows XP to 7, and the Windows 8 Settings architecture, for which he holds a US patent. His Start Menu features have shipped on every copy of Windows since Windows 10.
Then Microsoft Research, building computer-vision products; Visual Studio Codespaces, where he implemented dev container support — a feature that became central to the product; and GitHub Codespaces, as primary engineer on cross-tenant networking: connecting isolated cloud environments to on-premises corporate networks, securely, at global scale.
That last specialism is the one Cusher is built on. Since 2023 he has delivered AI assistant platforms, real-time notification systems, and zero-trust hybrid architectures for enterprise clients across Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.

The Name
Named for a working river
The Cusher drove the mills along its length for the better part of a century — flax, corn, linen. The water did not ask for credit. It turned the wheel, and the work got done.
That is the standard the name was taken from: software that runs quietly and does something useful for someone, rather than software that announces itself.
